The Honourable Mr. Justice Johnson Evan Gicheru was appointed Judge of the High Court of Kenya in 1982. After 6 years as a puisne Judge, Mr. Justice Gicheru was appointed as a Judge of the Court of Appeal on 8 th June, 1988, where he served until 21 st February, 2003 when he was appointed the Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya. Prior to his judicial appointment, Mr. Justice Gicheru had worked as Senior State Counsel in the Office of the Attorney-General and as an administrative officer in the Office of the President.
The Chief Justice is remembered for his firm and judicious Chairing of the 1990-91 Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the Disappearance and Death of the then Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Robert Ouko.
At the time when he was appointed to the office of Chief Justice, Kenya’s Judiciary was on the spotlight of the national and international media and on the threshold of judicial reforms on a scale not previously witnessed elsewhere in the modern world. “ Steering the Judiciary through these unprecedented reforms and thereafter keeping abreast of contemporary best practices in the administration of justice has been a great challenge”, he says.
The Chief Justice is also renowned for his efforts in entrenching integrity within the Judiciary, streamlining the processes of the Court, the independence of judicial officers as well as the operational and financial independence of the Judiciary as an arm of the government.
Mr. Justice Gicheru is married to Mrs. Margaret Gicheru and they have 7 children.
