THE HON. LADY JUSTICE MARY N. KASANGO
The Hon. Lady Justice Mary N. Kasango
Judge of the High Court of Kenya
Appointed: 28 th October, 2003.
The Hon. Lady Justice Mary N. Kasango (formerly Ms. Mary Muhanji), was called to the bar in Lincoln’s Inn at Chancery Lane in London in 1979. This was after her graduation from the Council of Legal Education, Grays Inn. She had previously been conferred with a Bachelors of Laws (Hons.) degree at the Middlesex University, London in 1978, after studying for four years.
Lady Justice Mary Kasango received her early education at the Star of the Sea School in Mombasa, Kenya between 1964 and 1968 before joining St. Mary’s Church of England Secondary School in London, from which she graduated in 1971. Between 1972 and 1974, she was a General Certificate of Education (G.C.E.) student of the Pultney Further Education School in London.
Before her appointment as a Judge of the High Court in 2003, she was the proprietor and manager of Muhanji-Kasango Advocates, a busy law firm based in Nairobi, which she had established in 1992. During her practicing years, she handled numerous company law litigation briefs largely involving winding-up and registration of companies, conveyancing and land law litigation. Even with the demands of managing a busy law practice, she was also a part-time lecturer at the Kenya School of Law instructing students on the subject of Trust Accounts, a calling she had taken up back in 1987.
Lady Justice Mary Kasango’s private practice and her subsequent appointment to the Bench was the culmination of a career that began with her service as a law pupil in Bhailal Patel & Patel Advocates in 1983 and later, between 1985 and 1991, as an associate in Hamilton, Harrison and Matthews Advocates, one of Kenya’s oldest and leading law firms. Here, she was in charge of serving a corporate client portfolio which included the Kenya Commercial Bank, the National Bank of Kenya, ABN-Amro Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, General Motors and Brooke Bond Co. Ltd.
However, her professional experience is not confined to the legal system. Between June and December of 1983, she was an Assistant Manager at the New Ainsworth Hotel in Westlands, Nairobi.
Lady Justice Mary Kasango is married and she lives in Nairobi with her family. Upon her appointment in 2003, she presided over commercial litigation at the Milimani Commercial Courts in Nairobi until her first upcountry posting in early 2007 to the Nyeri High Court.
