Judge of the High Court

Position: Judge of the High Court
Appointed: October 2003

The Hon. Mr Justice Isaac Lenaola is a Judge of the High Court of Kenya. An alumni of the University of Nairobi and the Kenya School of Law. Prior to his appointment to the Bench on 28/10/2003, the Judge was in private practice specializing in Land and Commercial Law.

     While in practice, the Judge was also an active member of the Kenyan Civil Society and was the Chair of the Legal Affairs Committee of Kenya Pastoralists forum, a lobby group for pastoralist and marginalized peoples. He has addressed conferences and meetings in Africa, Europe and Latin America on the subject of minority and marginalized people’s rights and has written extensively on constitutional guarantees of those rights. He is an alumni of the International Leadership Programme of the United States Department of State.

     The Judge was appointed a commissioner in the people’s commission on the constitution dubbed the “Ufungamano Initiative” and in 1998 later a commissioner in the constitution of Kenya Review Commissioner chaired by respected constitutional lawyer, Prof. Yash Pal Ghai in 1999.

     The Judge is presently the Chair, Kenya Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association and Treasurer, East African Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association and an active member of the Commonwealth Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association.

     The learned Judge is presently a member of the Constitutional Tribunal Investigating the conduct of puisne Judges created after the 2003 purge on the Judiciary and is also the Chair, Judiciary Open Day Committee and a Board Member, Judicial Training Institute. He also sits on the Boards of a number of charitable institutions including The International Center for Relief of Starvation and Suffering (ICROSS).

     Apart from performing his Judicial duties, the Judge is a guest lecturer at the Kenya School of Law and has taken time to give speeches at the National Defence College, Karen, the World Bank offices in Upperhill and Rotary Clubs in Nairobi.
