The Honourable Mr Justice Muga Apondi was born on May 15th, 1955. He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi and a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Kenya School of Law.
Justice Apondi did his primary schooling at Buxton and Burania Primary Schools between 1961 and 1968. He later joined Alidina Visram High School where he did both his ‘O’ Level and “A” Level education, which he completed in 1974 before joining the University of Nairobi in 1975 for his Bachelor of Laws studies. Mr. Justice Apondi attained his degree in law in 1978 and joined the Kenya School of Law in the same year for his diploma studies which he completed in 1979.
Mr. Justice Apondi’s career began at the Nairobi Lands Office where he served as a Stamp Duty Counter in 1979. In January 1980 he moved to Kakamega as a Lands Registrar before proceeding to Siaya as the District Land Registrar in January 1981. He would later return to Kakamega in the same year as the District Land Registrar.
The Honourable Judge joined the Judiciary as an Acting Resident Magistrate in October 1983. In July 1985, he was promoted to the rank of Resident Magistrate and posted to Homa Bay and in 1987, was elevated to the rank of Senior Resident Magistrate. In 1990 he was posted to Kisii where he served as an Acting Principal Magistrate until 1991 when he was transferred to Nakuru for relief duties.
It was while he was serving as a Senior Resident Magistrate in Nyeri that he received yet another promotion, becoming a Chief Magistrate in 1996. In that position, he served as the Chairman of the Rent Tribunal in Nairobi in 1998, at the Kakamega Law Courts again in 1999 and finally at the Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi in 2001. On December 16th, 2002, he was appointed a Judge of the High Court.
Justice Muga Apondi has attended various courses in his career in the Judiciary. In 1992, he attended the Kenya Institute of Administration Senior Management Seminar and in October 1997, he attended the Commonwealth Judges and Magistrate’s meeting in South Africa. He also undertook a course on Managing for Results at the Kenya School of Professional Studies in April of 1997 and in May 1999, he underwent the Total Quality Management Course. Later in 2001, he undertook the Total Quality Training Course and also obtained a certificate in Computer Studies. He later attended an Alternative Dispute Resolution and Development Workshop in 2001 as well as a Strategic Criminal Justice Workshop at the Utalii College in March 2002.
A Christian and married, the Honourable Justice Muga Apondi enjoys playing tennis and soccer during the weekends and listening to music while reading in the evenings.
His objectives are to serve the Judiciary effectively, competently and diligently and to remain an active and energetic jurist.
