Justice Fred Andago Ochieng was born on 4 th November, 1958 in what is now Nakuru District. He undertook his primary education between 1965 and 1971 at Mariakani Primary School in Nairobi and M.M. Shah Primary School in Kisumu, attaining his Certificate of Primary Education. In 1972, he joined Nyabondo High School in Sondu for his O-Level education which he completed in 1976 before proceeding to Lenana School in Nairobi for his A-Level education.
During his school time, he served in various leadership positions including the Scouts Troop Leader, the Secretary of both the Debating Society and the History Club and the Chairman of the Young Christian Students. He was also a member of his school’s athletics team between 1974 and 1976.
In 1978, he was admitted to the University of Nairobi as an undergraduate at the Faculty of Law and in 1981, he matriculated with honors earning a Bachelors degree in law (LL B (Hons)). While at the University, he served as a member of the National Executive Team of the Young Christian Students. He proceeded to the Kenya School of Law from which he attained a Diploma in Legal Practice in 1982.
Following his admission to the bar in January 1983, he joined the law firm of Kaplan & Stratton Advocates in Nairobi of which he became a partner in 1987. At the law firm, he undertook civil litigation covering various areas of law including banking, employment contracts, libel and slander, commercial contracts, intellectual property and medical malpractice.
It was while in active legal practice that he was joined in holy matrimony to Angela Adhiambo Orowe in 1986. In 2003, he left legal practice to take up his appointment as a Judge of the High Court of Kenya.
In 2000, he was appointed to serve as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of Our Lady of Mercy Secondary School in Nairobi and later, in 2005, as a Member of the Council of the Kenya Red Cross Society and as a Delegate of Sheria Savings and Credit Co-operative Society representing the Judges of the High Court. Still in 2005, he became the 2 nd Publicity Secretary for the East African Magistrates and Judges Association and in April 2006, he was appointed to the Vice Presidency of the Association.
Justice Ochieng is a member of the International Bar Association, the East African Magistrates and Judges Association, the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association, the Kenya Red Cross Society and the Parklands Sports Club. He enjoys camping, picnicking, playing tennis, watching sports and traveling.
